The Most Innovative Ideas of 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/indexes/2007/12/08/magazine/index.html
Cutting Edge Abstract: For better or worse, these are 70 ideas that helped make 2007 what it was.
Why it's important: How will an office chair, Radiohead's payment model, wave energy and crowdware affect your life?
Left-Hand-Turn Elimination
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/09/magazine/09left-handturn.html?_r=2&ref=magazine&oref=slogin&oref=slogin
Cutting Edge Abstract: UPS is going to reduce the number of left turns its delivery trucks make to increase its efficiency.
Why it's important: You've probably seen Zoolander, which makes this seems like a bit of a joke, but sometimes a zany idea can have more benefits than initially meet the eye.
When Will TV Ads Get Webified?
http://newteevee.com/2007/12/13/when-will-tv-ads-get-webified/
Cutting Edge Abstract: TV ads these days are looking more and more like web ads, incorporating better targeting and analytics, and moving towards a model of charging by the impression or even by a specific response taken by a viewer.
Why it's important: " ...marketing videos say it involves things like remote control click streams and program guides correlated with census information, as monitored from within the set-top box." Are past advertising ideas the right place to be looking for future methodologies?
The Checklist
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/12/10/071210fa_fact_gawande/
Cutting Edge Abstract: The amazing effect of implementing a way to remember how to do things and a great example of how it's working to save lives and money in hospitals around the country.
Why it's important: What simple checklists can use to change your work efficiency?
7 Stupid Thinking Errors You Probably Make
http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/7-stupid-thinking-errors-you-probably-make.html
Cutting Edge Abstract: The brain isn’t a flawless piece of machinery. There's a field in psychology which studies brain errors known as biases. Although you can’t upgrade your mental hardware, noticing these biases can clue you into possible mistakes.
Why it's important: How can you think about a challenge differently to come up with better, or at least a wider range of solutions?
2007 Sunset Idea House, a Super Green Remodel
http://www.jetsongreen.com/2007/12/2007-sunset-ide.html
Cutting Edge Abstract: A sneak peak at a new net zero energy house recently built in San Francisco
Why It's Important: What does it take to truly live green?

BSSP should be using delicioius to share links, resources and materials
http://webworkerdaily.com/2007/11/01/become-a-delicious-power-user/
Cutting Edge Abstract: Using delicious will help us retain, organize, and use information in a highly effective manner. Here are some tips on how to do it.
Why It's Important: Information certainly needs to be synthesized, but if Hanncock wants to better understand something about the weight loss industry for a Jenny Craig pitch he can gain access to this database of articles we've created to quickly and easily find a broad range of information. (see exhibit #1 : http://del.icio.us/kenhfisher/research:weightloss) Why don't we all start assembling our own online library of archived articles?
Brands Infiltrate Social Circles to Create Buzz
http://www.adweek.com/aw/magazine/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003664416
Cutting Edge Abstract: Recent research re-confirms a long-held fact: Consumers are more influenced by the recommendations of their friends than by marketing messages. A study conducted by The Nielsen Co., parent of Adweek, recommendations from others are trusted by 78 percent of consumers, while TV ads are trusted by 56 percent, web ads fared even worse, with just 26 percent trusting them.
Why it's important: Is it an oxymoron for marketing to use word of mouth? Word of mouth works because there is an inherent level of trust and respect; well how do marketers use it to their advantage without destroying the trust and respect of their advocates?
Tapping Influencers

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB117106531769704150-zpK10wf4CJOB4IKoJS5anuNoi6Y_20080209.html
Cutting Edge Abstract: Surprisingly influential people who, usually without pay and purely for the thrill of it, are trolling cyberspace for news and ideas to share with their network have interesting implications for advertisers.
Why it's important: Can defying marketability destroy your brand?

How to take a course at MIT free -- at home
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07322/834852-298.stm
Cutting Edge Abstract: Later this month, MIT will celebrate reaching its goal of having written portions, at least, of 1,800 courses -- virtually the entire course catalog, including materials from about 90 percent of its professors -- available free on its Web site.
Why it's important: How will the model for teaching & learning continue to change in the world of internets.
7 Habits of Highly Innovative People
http://thinksimplenow.com/creativity/7-habits-of-highly-innovative-people/
Cutting Edge Abstract: Creativity can be cultivated by having the right mindset. "Your creativity can be limited when your mind creates assumptions, self-imposed constraints and self-limiting inhibitions. I have found that we can remove these assumptions just by being in the moment; start doing, and stop thinking."
Why it's important: It's like the age old argument about the Disruption process - doesn't the idea of Disruption say that there shouldn't be a disruptive process? Similarly, should there be a process to being creative? Maybe not, but creativity can always grow out of experiencing new things and approaching things different so I thought this attempt at habits for creativity could have its benefits.
It's knitting needles you want, not iPhones
http://news.independent.co.uk/business/news/article3172037.ece
Cutting Edge Abstract: Some of the world's largest firms show a backlash against Facebook and mobile phones in favour of what's being called "analogue living". Young people, under pressure to communicate through so many media channels, still crave their gadgets, but also want some low-tech time out and one-dimensional products.
Why it's important: This is more than a Steampunk movement , it's about finding a happy medium between online and offline.
Don't flame me, bro'
http://www.newscientist.com/blog/technology/2007/11/dont-flame-me-bro.html
Cutting Edge Abstract: We are fundamentally changing how we communicate and some argue that being more distant from the person we're talking to makes us less focused on our identity and results in more honest and in some cases more aggressive behavior.
Why it's important: How is online communication like email, comments & text evolving?

Who needs Google? Facebook's stealth ad system
http://valleywag.com/tech/facebook/who-needs-google-facebooks-stealth-ad-system-313354.php
Cutting Edge Abstract: Facebook's advertising Flyers Pro lets advertisers target by city, gender, age, relationship status, employer, educational level, political views, and -- are you listening, Google? -- keywords.
Why it's important: Will this targeted web2.0 advertising work on you, does your Facebook profile even contain accurate information?

Long known as Kenneth's unlucky kid brother, Neil is vindicated as his Iconix soars amid industrywide stagnation
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/07_44/b4056067.htm?chan=search
Cutting Edge Abstract: The business model of Iconix is that it buys fashion brands — but just the brand, not the company.
Why it's important: How much power does a brand have; even ones experiencing bad times and do they have value and revival potential simply because of their recognizability?
